Situated opposite the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Almudena Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid.
The foundation stone was laid in 1883 but due to insufficient funds, there were many delays in carrying out the work.
The crypt was opened in 1911 but work was suspended again during the civil war and resumed with limited resources in 1939.
The cathedral was completed in 1993 and was consecrated by Pope John Paul II.
